Gyms Reopen in Denton - What you need to Know

Gyms Reopen in Denton - What you need to Know

So, Monday (May 18, 2020) is a big day for us fitness types in Texas, because we FINALLY get to go back to the gym, thanks to Gov. Abbott’s, Executive Order to Expand Openings of Certain Businesses and Activities.  In that executive order, starting at 12:01am on May 18, 2020, “Gyms and exercise facilities and classes that operate at up to 25 percent of the total listed occupancy of the gym or exercise facility; provided, however, that locker rooms and shower facilities must remain closed, but restrooms may open.” While most of us want full access of our gyms back, at this point we will take what we can get.

Recently, I have heard so many mixed messages regarding the gyms opening.  What the state is requiring, what gyms can and cannot do, gym members must wear masks, gym members must wear gloves, etc.  Even the Governor’s own, “Minimum Standard Health Protocols,” kind of contradicts itself.  Here is a link to the Minimum Standard Health Protocols:

https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/organization/opentexas/OpenTexas-Checklist-Gyms-Exercise-Facilities.pdf

The very first sentence of the second paragraph, completely removes any mandated requirements for gyms/health clubs to follow.  “The following are the minimum recommended health protocols for all gyms and exercise facilities and classes, whether indoor, outdoor, individual, or group, choosing to operate in Texas.”  If you keep reading through it, you will see that the check list is a very standard list that any business should follow anytime, not just for gyms/health clubs to follow, while this Covid-19 outbreak is going on.  So, here is a list of a few debunked rumors I heard this past week…

  • Gym members are NOT required by the State of Texas to wear a mask/face covering while working out.
  • Gym members are NOT required by the State of Texas to wear gloves while working out.
  • Restrooms are NOT required by the State of Texas to be closed.

All that being said, each gym/health club may have their own mandates/requirements that members must follow. So, you may want to call before you head to your local gym to see what those are.

While gyms/health clubs can open back up on May 18th, not all of them plan to do so.  The ones that are opening may have reduced hours and may require you to call head to schedule a time for you to workout.  We went ahead and did some research on the local gyms in the Denton area.  We reached out via the phone, looked up their website, checked out their social media pages, etc., and while we did not get information from all of them, below is a list of local gyms in the Denton area, that we know of, that plan on opening up on Monday, May 18th.

Here is a list of things that just about every gym we got in contact with plans to follow starting May 18th.

  • They will stay at or below 25% capacity
  • None of them will allow access to lockers/locker rooms.
  • They will allow access to restrooms.
  • They have all moved some equipment and fitness accessories around to help maintain social distancing.
  • They have all gone above the state’s Minimum Standard Health Protocols for cleaning.

**Please note that all the information below regarding the gyms/health clubs is subject to change at any time, at the gym’s discretion.  The information below is for Monday, May 18th, 2020 only.  Contact the gyms/health clubs below for more info.  These are listed in alphabetical order. **

We tried to make this gym list as complete as possible, but we failed short.  One was on us, because we started it late, but two in most cases it was difficult to get the basic information above from the gyms.  Again, some of them did a great job.  All the information we needed, was listed on their website, on their social media pages, etc.  But some gyms have not posted on their social media pages in over a year nor have they updated their website in a long time.  So, I hope that gym owners/manager look at how they get information out not only to their members, but how they communicate to the general public.

Well, I hope you all are as excited as I am to go back to the gym on May 18th.  I plan on being at my gym at 5am to destroy some legs!  I hope that you found this blog post informative as well as easy to understand.  That was my goal as I was writing it up.  Since this blog is regarding the local gyms in the Denton area, I ask that you reach out to each of them for more information.  If you have any questions regarding supplements, any of our other blog posts, or if we can help you in any other way, please stop by the store or send me an email – [email protected]
